Things to do that you don't find in the guidebooks.....

Concerts on Lake Dillon - Every Saturday evening throughout the summer, The Town of Dillon hosts free concerts at the Amphitheatre on the Lake. The setting is magical, the music is always good, and the atmosphere will make you feel like you have stepped into Mayberry. Bring dinner along and enjoy an evening that you'll talk about forever.
Feed the fish at Keystone Lake - One dollar will buy a bag of fish food at the kiosk on Keystone Lake. The lake is stocked with enormous trout and friendly ducks ~ and even a few muskrats. Throw a handfull into the Lake and enjoy the show! This may sound very simple, but it is a true joy! (Don't try this in the winter months :))
Food/Wine/Beer/Music Festivals - Check the Summit Daily for information on the local events ~ they are usually very family oriented and often free.
Flyfishing - Mary and Richard (the Lodge Hosts) are avid flyfishers. The can direct you to the local outfitter or the best water. Visit www.fishcolorado.com. |
| Fall Colors - If you've never seen the Aspens change ~ this needs to be on your list of things to do. The trees shimmer and reflect sunlight ~ you would swear that there is 14K gold woven into the leaves. The timing changes yearly depending on temperature and moisture ~ late September or early October are usually good times.
TWOFERS - One of the joys of visiting the resort areas in the late Fall and mid-Spring seasons are the specials! Check the Summit Daily Newspaper for two-for-ones at even the best restaurants in town. Don't be self conscious about showing up with a coupon ~~ everyone else in the place will have one too!
Outlet Stores - Dillon and Silverthorne have a boatload of factory stores off Highway 6 by I-70. I'm certainly not suggesting that you spend your time in the high country in stores, but if there is something that you need while you are visiting ~ you'll find a wide assortment of offerings and some pretty good prices. www.silverthornefactorystores.com
Mountain Biking DOWN the mountain - Not to be missed ~ but also not for the faint of heart. Rent a bike in Keystone and let the gondola take you and the bike to the top of the mountain ~ then ride down. Plan on some scrapes and scratches and something that you will talk about when you get home to the flatlands. |

Gondola - Keystone and Vail have gondolas that you can take to the top of the mountains. Breckenridge and Copper offer chairlift rides. At times of the year, the rides are free ~ for guests over 70, it's always free. Usually, it's no more than $5 - $10 for the experience and it's well worth it. At Keystone, you can ride the Gondola free and enjoy dinner at the top of the mountain at either The Alpenglowe Stube or Der Fondue Chessel. Make reservations (970) SKI KEYSTONE.
Tubing and Sledding on the mountain - Copper Mountain and Keystone offer tubing (ride the mountain on an innertube) ~ it's a blast and there is a tow rope to take you back to the top so it's all the fun without the work! Keystone rents sleds and has a sledding hill. If you would prefer to go sledding the old fashioned way, try the hill at Carter Park in Breckenridge. Head toward Breck and ask anyone that looks like a local to direct you to the hill.
Bike Path - The Lodge lies right on the bike path that connects Keystone, Frisco, Breckenridge, and Vail. The bike path can also take you to the Lake and marina. There are many places in the area to rent bicycles for a day or a week. |
| The Breckenridge Symphony - practices every day in the summer under the big tent right off Main Street in the center of town. You are welcome to sit and listen and spend some time sitting on the banks of the Blue River that runs through the center of town.
Hikes - Click here for local hikes ~ our favorites are Mohawk Lakes, McCullough Gulch, and Quandry Peak. If you would like to attempt a 'fourteener' (a 14,000+ mountain) for the first time, Grays and Torreys is your best bet. http://www.summitexplorer.com
Butterhorn Bakery - On Main Street in Frisco, you can find the best Breakfasts and Lunches that you will ever eat. Say hello to Cindy, the owner, and enjoy a Reuben or a Mile High Turkey sandwich. If you aren't starving, share a sandwich with a friend ~ most of them are as big as your plate!
Rags to Riches - If you find that you need an extra sweater or jacket during your stay and you don't want to spend an arm and a leg, visit the Consignment store on Main Street in Frisco. There is men's and women's outerwear and shoes and lots of womens clothing. There is a consignment store for babies and toddlers right next door. (970) 668-3775. |

Loveland Pass - Leave Keystone Resort, take a right, and keep going. Loveland Pass is over 12,000 ft elevation and you can find snow yearround. There is a short hike as you reach the summit ~ even beginners can make the short climb. Beware of the altitude (don't be surprised that there really ISN'T any air) and bring a jacket.
The Summit Daily - There are newspaper stands all over the county where you can pick up a free local newspaper. It is the best source for information about current offerings, twofer specials, and celebrations throughout the area.

Dentist - Did you know that the best dentist in
Colorado lives and workds in Summit County? Okay, he's my husband and I'm a little biased, but if your vacation plans include a root canal ~ give him a call. (Maybe your plans DON'T include a trip to the dental office, but if you find yourself with an emergency, he's the man for you!) (970) 393-2269 or (970) 453-1996. www.summitsmiles.com.
